In response to the widespread economic hardship affecting Nigerians, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has urged both federal and state governments to establish a task force dedicated to stabilizing food prices nationwide. The NGO’s call for intervention comes amidst preparations for a nationwide protest planned by Nigerian youth from August 1 to 10, aimed at addressing the current economic difficulties.
MMWG, through a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Abdullahi Ibrahim, cautioned against participating in the planned protests. The group highlighted the potential dangers of such actions, noting that even peaceful protests in Nigeria often attract hoodlums and miscreants who can escalate tensions and lead to violence. They referenced past protests, such as the #ENDSARS demonstrations, which resulted in looting, destruction, and increased suffering for many Nigerians.
Instead of pursuing protests, MMWG advocates for dialogue and peaceful resolutions to address the issues. They praised organizations, groups, and individuals who have withdrawn their support for the protest and encouraged others to collaborate with the government to find solutions to the economic challenges.
The group also commended the Nigerian Senate for expediting the passage of the New Minimum Wage Bill and the 2024 Supplementary Budget of N6 trillion, intended to implement the new minimum wage and fund other projects. MMWG called for the comprehensive implementation of the new minimum wage, including adjustments to workers' salaries and pension payments to ensure that the benefits are meaningful and equitable.
Furthermore, MMWG appealed to state governors to adopt similar measures to ensure that the new minimum wage positively impacts the lives of their constituents.
