NAFDAC Shuts Down 100 Shops in Enugu for Selling Fake Alcoholic Beverages, Arrests Four Suspects

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down approximately 100 shops in Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, for allegedly dealing in suspected counterfeit alcoholic beverages.

During a coordinated raid, the agency also confiscated a truckload of adulterated products and arrested four suspected traders.

Mr. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director for the South-East Zone, stated on Monday that the suspects are in custody and will be charged after the ongoing investigation.

He emphasized that the raid aligns with NAFDAC’s mandate to safeguard public health and eliminate unwholesome, substandard, fake, and adulterated products from the South-East.

“We have been in the Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, since Friday and have shut down 100 shops identified for selling fake alcoholic beverages. Arrests have been made, and the suspects are currently in custody. These counterfeit alcoholic beverages are being sold to unsuspecting customers and the general public, but we are determined to clear the market of these harmful products,” Iluyomade said.

The NAFDAC Zonal Director noted that the intensive operation was conducted with the active collaboration of the Police, Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Army, all of which deployed personnel for the well-coordinated raid.
