Netanyahu's Congressional Ovation and the Normalization of Gaza Conflict

On Wednesday, Benjamin Netanyahu's address to the US Congress received a rapturous standing ovation, underscoring a stark shift in global attitudes toward the Gaza conflict. The applause signals an unyielding, unconditional support for Israel, despite the ongoing devastation in Gaza.

This endorsement contrasts sharply with recent statements from US Democratic hopeful Kamala Harris, who decried the public's desensitization to the violence but faces criticism for the US's continued military support to Israel. The relentless assault on Gaza, marked by widespread destruction and civilian casualties, seems to have become an accepted part of the geopolitical landscape.

The brutality witnessed in Gaza has raised profound questions about the respect for international law and basic human rights. Despite numerous global protests and legal rulings condemning Israel’s actions—such as the International Court of Justice's finding of apartheid and the International Criminal Court's call for an arrest warrant for Netanyahu—these measures have done little to halt the conflict. The world’s reaction appears insufficient to change the status quo.

The normalization of Gaza's suffering has created a grim reality where the value of Palestinian lives is diminished. Philosopher Achille Mbembe's concept of "necropolitics" aptly describes this scenario, where power dictates which lives are expendable. This situation has fostered a dangerous separation between "us" and "them," reducing empathy and support for the beleaguered population of Gaza.

The ongoing crisis has become intertwined with the everyday distractions of modern life, overshadowed by political spectacle and trivial content. This shifting focus highlights a troubling trend: a growing indifference to the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza.

As the world adjusts to this new norm, the overarching consequence is a degradation of collective humanity. The relentless nature of the conflict risks rendering global solidarity ineffective, leaving an unsettling legacy of normalized violence and diminished empathy for those in need.
