Nigerian Correctional Service Appeals for Public Assistance in Recapturing 31 Fugitive Inmates

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has issued a public alert regarding 31 inmates who remain at large following a recent prison break at the Suleja Correctional Facility. The NCoS is calling for public assistance in recapturing these individuals, emphasizing that they pose a significant threat to public safety and national security.

In a statement released on Thursday by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Controller of Corrections (ACC) Abubakar Umar, the NCoS detailed the ongoing efforts to address the situation. The alert comes in the wake of a devastating downpour on April 24, which severely damaged the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State. The storm led to a breach in the facility, allowing around 119 inmates to escape.

Umar noted that the NCoS has since implemented both overt and covert strategies aimed at recapturing the fugitives. The Service has also intensified security measures across all custodial facilities to prevent further incidents.

“The publication of information on the escaped inmates is crucial to assist in their recapture,” Umar said. “We are urging sister security agencies and the general public to be vigilant and report any sightings or information about these individuals.”

The NCoS has released details of some of the escapees from the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre to aid in their capture. The Service is committed to restoring all escapees to custody and ensuring the security of its facilities.

The NCoS's appeal highlights the urgent need for public cooperation in addressing the ongoing security challenge posed by the escapees.
