Nigerian Correctional Service Releases Updated List of Escaped Inmates

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has released new names and photographs of inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State, following a mass breakout on April 24. The escape was facilitated by severe rainfall that compromised the prison's walls, enabling 118 inmates to flee.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, attributed the incident to the facility's deteriorated condition and promised federal intervention to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar initially reported on June 6 that 23 of the escapees had been recaptured. By June 15, the NCoS had listed 18 remaining fugitives on its website. The earlier identified escapees include Ogbonna Kingsley, Auwal Mohammed, Mustapha Ibrahim, Suleiman Sani, Raphael Kelly, Abdullahi Babangida, Idris Bashir, Umar Mustapha, Ayuba Obedience, Lamido Gambo, Garba Fidelis, Mohammed Jibrin, Sylvester Allison, Albert Israel, Edoga Okwudili, Olaiya Stephen, Ibrahim Aminu, and Audu Usman.

The NCoS has now updated the list with names and photographs of 13 additional escapees, bringing the total number of identified fugitives to 31. The newly listed escapees are Tasiu Mohammed, Philip Ola, Mohammed Lawal, Buba Bello, Biyo Flamingo, Onyedikachi Emeka, Augustine Uden, Gambo Lamido, Sani Muhajid, Abubakar Hashiru, Haruna Salisu, Solomon Gkwangurum, and Aliyu Ismaila.

Umar stated that the NCoS is employing both "overt and covert" methods to recapture the escapees. He urged collaboration with sister security agencies and the public in the search efforts.

“The information on these fugitives is published to assist sister security agencies and the general public in identifying and returning them to custody,” Umar said.

The NCoS has provided contact details for reporting sightings and encourages anyone with information to promptly contact the nearest security agency.
