Tennis icon Martina Navratilova has publicly criticized former President Donald Trump over the large ear bandage he wore at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, following a recent assassination attempt. Navratilova, who has won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, labeled the bandage a "PR stunt" and questioned its authenticity.
In a response on X (formerly Twitter), Navratilova expressed her skepticism about the necessity of the bandage. She pointed out that Trump appeared without any dressing on his ear immediately after the attempted assassination in Pennsylvania.
“This is obviously a PR stunt,” Navratilova tweeted. “The day after the shooting he had no dressing on his ear… not even a Band-Aid.”
Navratilova's comments were sparked by a post on X from a user who questioned the need for such an extensive bandage for an ear wound. The post, which cited a trauma nurse's opinion, suggested that the bandage was excessive unless the injury was severe.
“A good friend of mine is the charge nurse (Level IV FNP) at a major trauma centre in a huge city,” the post read. “She says there’s absolutely no need to dress an ear wound like this, unless half his ear was blown off. And even then, it wouldn’t look like this.”
Navratilova also expressed doubt about the legitimacy of the injury, noting that Trump went golfing the day after the incident, which seemed inconsistent with the severity of the injury implied by the bandage.
“Correction – there was an abominable assassination attempt and the bullet grazed the prompter and a shard from that hit Trump’s ear,” she wrote. “Next day he played golf with no visible damage. And after that he put the bandage on for the convention…”
Navratilova is not alone in her skepticism. TMZ reported that the blood on Trump's ear might have resulted from shattered glass from a destroyed teleprompter, rather than a direct injury from the shooting, which tragically killed one spectator but did not harm the former President directly.
