Omoyele Sowore Challenges FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s Ban on August 1 Protest

Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has responded defiantly to Nyesom Wike’s statement declaring that Abuja will not be available for protests on August 1. Sowore took to his X handle on Friday to assert that the planned nationwide demonstrations will indeed commence from the capital city.

Sowore emphasized, “It is starting from and in Abuja!” reinforcing his commitment to the protest despite the FCT Minister’s warning.

The controversy erupted after Wike, during a press briefing following the FCT Security Council meeting in Abuja, announced that August 1 would be dedicated to the presentation of certificates of recognition to traditional rulers by the chairmen of the six Area Councils. The Minister’s remarks were aimed at preventing any disruptions on the day.

In response to the announcement, Sowore and other organizers have confirmed that the nationwide protests, under the banner #EndBadGovernance, will proceed as planned. The protests are set to run from August 1 to August 10, 2024, with demonstrators voicing their concerns over widespread hunger and inflation affecting Nigerians.

The nationwide mobilization reflects growing dissatisfaction with the current state of governance, and Sowore's firm stance highlights the ongoing tension between protest organizers and government officials.
