Ooni of Ife Expresses Concerns Over Potential Hijacking of Planned Protest

The Ooni of Ife, His Majesty Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has raised alarms about the possibility of the upcoming #EndBadGovernance# protest being exploited by individuals with ulterior motives. Speaking on Thursday, the Ooni emphasized that while peaceful protest is a civic right, it should not be derailed by those seeking to incite violence or disrupt public order.

The Ooni's comments come in the wake of President Bola Tinubu's recent engagements with APC governors and the Council of Traditional Rulers. These meetings focused on addressing the nation’s current challenges and improving government transparency.

The Ooni highlighted the unprecedented nature of the direct engagement between traditional rulers and the Federal Executive Council. He praised the government’s initiative to involve traditional leaders in discussions about governance and policy, marking a significant shift in political engagement in Nigeria.

He also cautioned against the potential for the protest to escalate into violence, urging unity and constructive dialogue instead. The Ooni reminded that while addressing grievances is important, it is crucial to avoid actions that could further harm the nation.

Echoing the Ooni’s sentiments, HRM Benjamin Ikenchuku Gbenoba, the Dein of Agbor, expressed optimism about the government’s new approach to governance. He acknowledged the government's recognition of the urgent need to address youth concerns and avoid the pitfalls of destruction seen in other countries.

Both traditional leaders called for peaceful engagement and collaboration between the government and citizens, stressing that unity and dialogue are key to overcoming Nigeria's current challenges.
