Organised Labour Leaders Accept N70,000 Minimum Wage Increase

In a notable development, leaders of Nigeria’s organized labour unions have confirmed their acceptance of the new minimum wage of N70,000 approved by President Bola Tinubu. This announcement was made following a meeting with the president on Thursday, July 18, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information, revealed that President Tinubu presented the wage increase during the meeting with key labour figures, including Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Comrade Festus Usifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), among other representatives.

Comrade Joe Ajaero, speaking on behalf of the unions, explained that the decision to accept the N70,000 wage increase was influenced by the additional incentives included in the offer. He emphasized that the commitment to review the national minimum wage law every three years was a significant factor in their decision. This new review cycle contrasts with previous practices, which often resulted in less frequent adjustments.

The unions' agreement marks a pivotal moment in Nigerian labour relations, reflecting a pragmatic approach to addressing workers' concerns while acknowledging the economic realities faced by the government.
