Political Speculation Rises as Beatrice Ituboh and Nyesom Wike Are Photographed Together

In Rivers State, recent photographs of Mrs. Beatrice Ituboh, the 2023 Labour Party gubernatorial candidate and former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), with Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, have stirred considerable speculation. The images, reportedly taken at Wike’s Abuja residence, have triggered concerns among supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Observers are suggesting that Ituboh's meeting with Wike could indicate a shift in her political allegiance, particularly given her earlier support for Fubara. Ituboh had previously demonstrated her backing for Fubara by withdrawing her legal challenge against his election, which she pursued through the Supreme Court.

The timing of this meeting, ahead of the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State, has raised questions about potential political maneuvers. Analysts are worried that Wike’s association with Ituboh might signify an attempt to capture the Labour Party's structures in the state, similar to his alleged influence over the All Progressives Congress (APC) through Tony Okocha's appointment as the State Caretaker Committee Chairman.

Meanwhile, Hilda Dokubo, the Labour Party Chairman in Rivers, faces challenges as she counters rumors of her dismissal from the party’s leadership. Critics are also questioning Ituboh’s new alignment with Wike, recalling her past criticisms of the former governor's tenure. During her time as NLC Chairperson, Ituboh had accused Wike of neglecting civil servants by failing to promote them or increase their salaries, which she described as a form of hatred towards the workers of Rivers State.

In an interview earlier this year, Ituboh highlighted her motivation for running in the 2023 gubernatorial election, citing the alleged mistreatment of Rivers State workers by Wike. She criticized Wike’s administration for its failure to pay pensions and adequately support retirees.

Before her candidacy, Ituboh had been a prominent figure in the NLC, often challenging Wike on issues related to civil service. Although she placed fourth in the 2023 gubernatorial race, her subsequent legal battles against Fubara's election ended without success.

The recent development raises questions about potential shifts in political alliances and the impact on the forthcoming elections in Rivers State.
