Russia Dismisses Trump's Claims of Swift Resolution to Ukraine Conflict

Russia has responded firmly to US presidential candidate Donald Trump's assertions that he could swiftly resolve the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict if elected president again.

During a CNN town hall in May 2023, Trump confidently stated, “They’re dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done — I’ll have that done in 24 hours.” He reiterated this pledge on subsequent campaign stops, suggesting he could achieve peace after meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, dismissed Trump's claims, emphasizing that resolving the Ukrainian crisis is not a matter of a single day.

Nebenzia, speaking to reporters recently, highlighted missed opportunities for peace, including a near agreement in April 2022 in Istanbul. He blamed Ukraine’s Western supporters for obstructing peace efforts and encouraging Kyiv to prolong the conflict.

Regarding Zelenskyy's proposed peace initiatives, Nebenzia derided them as unrealistic and criticized the international community's stance on Ukraine's territorial integrity as complicating diplomatic efforts.

While acknowledging Putin’s recent offer for a ceasefire conditional on specific Ukrainian actions, including withdrawing troops from certain regions and renouncing NATO aspirations, Nebenzia pointed out Zelenskyy’s firm rejection of these terms.

The diplomatic stalemate persists amid escalating ground tensions in Ukraine, complicating prospects for a swift resolution to the conflict despite international calls for peace based on Ukraine's territorial sovereignty.
