In a swift response to mounting national unrest, the Nigerian Senate has announced an emergency session set for Wednesday. This decision comes as the country braces for planned nationwide protests, which are scheduled to take place on August 1.
The Senate Clerk's internal memorandum revealed that Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio has called for this urgent plenary sitting. The notice to senators emphasized the importance of the session, urging all members to prioritize attendance due to the critical nature of the issues to be discussed.
The memo read, “Distinguished Senators are requested to make all necessary arrangements to attend as issues of national importance will be discussed. We regret all the inconveniences that this interruption of the recess will cause. Thanks for your usual cooperation.”
The upcoming protests are being organized in response to severe economic difficulties and widespread hunger affecting many Nigerians. The Senate’s emergency session underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for immediate legislative attention.
