The official cause of Sinéad O’Connor’s death has been confirmed as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchial asthma, according to her death certificate. The document, which was registered last Wednesday by O'Connor’s first husband and close friend, John Reynolds, was first reported by the Irish Independent on Sunday.
O’Connor, the renowned Irish artist and activist, passed away at her south London home on July 26, 2023. The death certificate details that her death was due to “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low-grade lower respiratory tract infection.” Her passing was initially ruled as non-suspicious by the police, and a coroner later confirmed that she died of natural causes.
The iconic singer, known globally for her 1990 hit cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” was also a prominent activist, famously tearing up a picture of Pope John Paul II during a 1992 Saturday Night Live performance in protest against child abuse. Her death led to an outpouring of tributes from across the globe, with Ireland’s taoiseach at the time, Leo Varadkar, praising her unmatched talent and worldwide impact.
O'Connor’s passing followed the tragic death of her 17-year-old son, Shane, who went missing and died 18 months prior. She is survived by her three other children.
