Former President Donald Trump has cast doubt on his earlier commitment to debate Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting he "probably" will participate but could also justify not doing so. This latest statement comes amidst ongoing discussions about the debate format and timing.
In a recent Fox News Channel interview, Trump was questioned multiple times about his willingness to debate Harris. Initially, Trump had shown eagerness to debate President Joe Biden, suggesting that Biden was not mentally fit for the challenge. However, with Biden out of the race and Harris now the Democratic presidential candidate, Trump has been reevaluating the terms of the debate.
Trump had previously expressed frustration with the debate being scheduled on ABC News, labeling the network as "fake news" and suggesting the debate should be moved to a different channel. Despite his earlier affirmation of debating Harris, Trump’s latest remarks indicate a shift in his stance.
On July 29, during an interview with Laura Ingraham, Trump was pressed on whether he would confirm his participation in a debate with Harris. Trump stated, "I want to do a debate. But I also can say this. Everybody knows who I am. And now people know who she is." He continued, "The answer is yes, I'll probably end up debating," but added that he could make a case for not participating.
Trump emphasized that any debates should be scheduled before early voting begins in various states. His mixed signals suggest a possible strategic calculation as he weighs the potential benefits and drawbacks of debating Harris.
