UAE Denies Exemption for Nigeria from Visa Application Process

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has clarified that Nigeria has not been exempted from the customary visa application process, contrary to recent announcements. The UAE government stated that the DV Hub website, which purportedly offered visa services under special conditions for Nigerians, is not affiliated with UAE authorities.

The controversy arose following an announcement that the UAE had lifted a three-year travel ban on Nigeria, with conditions outlined as "mutually beneficial." These conditions reportedly included obtaining a Document Verification Number (DVN).

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, unveiled the DV Hub website, where it was disclosed that obtaining a DVN required a non-refundable fee of N640,000 (excluding VAT) per application, in addition to other requirements such as proof of a six-month bank statement with a minimum balance of $10,000.

Nigerians expressed dissatisfaction with these stringent conditions, questioning why such requirements were exclusively imposed on Nigerian travelers.

Investigative journalist David Hundeyin further investigated and revealed that the DV Hub website was not linked to the UAE government but rather to a Canadian individual specializing in providing high-cost services to African governments.

The UAE's Department of Economy and Tourism clarified to TheCable that the DV Hub website was not endorsed by the UAE government. They directed inquiries about visa application procedures to Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners’ Affairs (GDRFAD).

The GDRFAD stated that standard visa application requirements include a personal photo, passport copy with at least six months validity, a travel ticket, and valid medical insurance within the UAE. They denied knowledge of the DVN requirement or the need for a $10,000 bank balance for visa applicants.

Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, assured that clarification regarding the DVN issue would be sought from the ministry’s office in the Middle East.

As the situation unfolds, Nigerians planning to travel to the UAE are advised to follow official guidelines provided by the UAE government through recognized channels to avoid potential misinformation and unauthorized fees associated with visa applications.
