VIDEO: Dog Accidentally Starts Fire in Colorado Springs Home

A curious dog accidentally caused a fire early Wednesday morning, July 3, at a family's home in Colorado Springs.

The incident began when the dog was sniffing boxes left on top of a stove, inadvertently turning on one of the burners while the family slept.

The fire ignited on the stovetop just before 4:45 a.m. and quickly spread, triggering the smoke alarms and the family’s Apple HomePod “high heat” alert, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

The male homeowner managed to extinguish the flames before anyone was seriously injured.

Firefighters arrived shortly after to assist the family and investigate the fire's origin.

Reviewing the home surveillance footage, they discovered the family's dog had jumped up on its hind legs to sniff the boxes, accidentally pressing a burner knob that ignited the boxes. The video released by the fire department shows the dog leaving the kitchen as flames erupted.

"After talking to the homeowners and reviewing their home security footage, we determined their dog got curious and accidentally switched on the oven with boxes on top," the Colorado Springs fire officials stated.

The homeowner who extinguished the fire was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries to people or pets were reported.

However, the fire caused significant damage to their house, rendering it uninhabitable.
