Fola David, a Lagos-based visual artist and medical doctor, has achieved a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for creating the largest individual drawing. His ambitious project, which aims to highlight Nigeria's rich cultural diversity, involves producing 1000 square meters of art.
The record-breaking attempt began on July 16 at Onikan Stadium and was planned to span six days. By the fourth day, David had already surpassed the previous record of 629.98 square meters. In a social media post on Friday night, he shared his excitement: "Congratulations to us all. On Day 4 at 9 pm, we broke the current record of 629.98 square metres, but we are not done! As the goal is to get over 1000 square metres of canvas covered in drawings; we are currently at 689 square metres. Let’s Go!”
David's monumental effort has garnered attention and support from notable Nigerians, including Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, former GWR holder Hilda Baci, and Farooq Oreagba, the prominent businessman who made headlines at the 2024 Ojude Oba Festival.
In addition, representatives from the College of Medicine University of Lagos (CMUL), where David is an alumnus, visited to show their support and encouragement.
David's achievement not only showcases his exceptional talent as a hyper-realism artist but also shines a spotlight on Nigeria's diverse cultural heritage through his expansive and detailed artwork.
