Woman Sentenced for Marijuana Trafficking by Federal High Court in Lagos

 A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced Omolola Kayode, a 30-year-old woman, for trafficking marijuana. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arraigned Kayode before Justice Mohammed Kala on a single charge of drug trafficking. She pleaded guilty to the charge.

During the court proceedings, the NDLEA counsel, Mr. P. O. Ajoku, presented the case facts with the help of NDLEA staff member Mr. Aliyu Mohammed Ogah, who provided evidence. When asked by the judge to confirm or deny the prosecution's evidence, Kayode confirmed the facts presented.

The judge found Kayode guilty based on her plea and the evidence. Her counsel, Chief Lilian Omotunde, requested leniency, noting that Kayode was a first-time offender and a single parent of two children. Omotunde also highlighted that Kayode did not waste the court's time.

Justice Kala sentenced Kayode to one year in prison, with an option to pay a fine of N100,000. Additionally, the convict was ordered to perform one month of community service.

The charge indicated that Kayode committed the offense on May 21 in the Carnal area of Festac Town, Lagos State. The NDLEA stated that Kayode, along with an accomplice known as “Commander” who is currently at large, illegally dealt in 259 grams of marijuana. This offense contravenes Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, 2004.
