Ego debunked speculations of a romantic involvement or marriage with Lagbaja, clarifying that her decision to leave the band was purely personal and not due to any conflict. “We did not fight, there were no issues. I believe in my instincts a lot, and that time, it was telling me to move. In all honesty, I felt there was nothing more I could do to top what I had done at that time. So, I said it was time for me to move on,” Ego stated.
She expressed her desire to pursue her own musical path, revealing that Lagbaja was supportive of her decision. “I sort of knew what I wanted: a band of my own, my own kind of music. When I went to him, we talked, and he was happy for me. Though it was bittersweet, he said, ‘I knew you had this leadership quality. I knew you were one of those people that would end up having her own band,’ and he was very supportive.”
Reflecting on whether she ever considered returning to Lagbaja’s band, Ego admitted, “Yes, there were days I craved that comfort where I didn’t have to make certain decisions, where all I needed to do was sing, dance, and get my pay. It was hard dealing with people from different backgrounds and making it work. There was a time I called Lagbaja and said, ‘I know I probably gave you a hard time, but now I understand what it means.’ He was like, ‘Okay,’ and I said, ‘It’s not easy, oh, it wasn’t easy.’”
Ego’s reflections highlight the complexities and rewards of forging an independent musical career after being part of a successful band.
