Eyewitnesses reported seeing the 184-foot yacht violently rocked by the storm before capsizing, as captured in security footage. Of the 22 individuals on board, 15 were rescued, while one body was initially recovered on Monday, believed to be that of the yacht's chef, Ricardo Thomas.
The newly recovered bodies bring the total number of confirmed deaths to five, with one person still missing. Among those unaccounted for are British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley executive Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and prominent American attorney Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda.
Rescue efforts have been hampered by the yacht's location, submerged around 50 meters underwater, allowing divers only a brief 12-minute window to explore the wreck. Despite the challenges, emergency crews continue to search the vessel, hoping to find any remaining survivors.
As investigations proceed, experts are calling the incident a "black swan event," a rare and unpredictable occurrence, likely triggered by a small waterspout that struck the yacht. The United Kingdom’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has dispatched a team to Sicily to assess the scene and investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic sinking.
