In a startling revelation, former U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster unveils how Russian President Vladimir Putin exploited Donald Trump's "ego and insecurities" to gain an almost hypnotic influence over the former U.S. president. McMaster, in his forthcoming book At War With Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House, recounts how Trump was impervious to any negative assessments of the Russian leader, even firing McMaster over the issue.
The memoir, set to be released on August 27, details McMaster's struggle to comprehend Putin's sway over Trump, particularly after the Kremlin's suspected involvement in the nerve agent attack on former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter in the UK. McMaster reveals how Trump, rather than confronting Putin, was more concerned with flattery from the Russian leader, even going so far as to annotate a newspaper article praising him and directing it to be sent to Putin.
McMaster describes Putin's calculated manipulation of Trump, leveraging praise to deepen divisions between Trump and his more hawkish advisers. The former national security adviser also highlights how discussions about Russia became nearly impossible due to Trump's obsession with the Mueller investigation into Russian election interference, ultimately leading to McMaster's ouster from the administration.
