A shocking incident has emerged from a chess tournament in Makhachkala, southern Russia, where security camera footage reportedly captured a Russian chess champion allegedly poisoning her younger rival with mercury.
Amina Abakarova, 40, a renowned chess player, has admitted to pouring mercury near the board where her rival, Umayganat Osmanova, 30, was scheduled to compete. Osmanova fell ill with severe dizziness and nausea following the match at the Dagestan Chess Championship.
According to reports, Abakarova allegedly used mercury from a thermometer, discreetly applying it to Osmanova’s board and smearing it with a chess piece. The incident was brought to light when the tournament's judge reported it to the police, and CCTV footage later identified Abakarova in proximity to the affected board.
Abakarova has been detained and could face up to three years in prison if convicted. Dagestan’s Minister of Sport, Sazhida Sazhidova, expressed disbelief at the situation, stating, “Like many others, I am perplexed by what happened, and the motives of such an experienced competitor as Amina Abakarova are incomprehensible. The actions she took could have led to a most tragic outcome, threatening the lives of everyone who was present, including herself. Now she must answer for what she did by the law.”
Reports suggest that Abakarova's motive stemmed from “personal hostility” towards Osmanova, who had recently defeated her in a regional contest. Abakarova allegedly accused Osmanova of being disrespectful towards her and her family.
Despite the poisoning, Osmanova continued to participate in the tournament and even secured a prize. She is now advocating for the “maximum punishment” for Abakarova. The case has stirred significant controversy within the chess community, with Abakarova’s friends describing her alleged actions as “completely out of character.”
Abakarova is currently facing charges of “intentional infliction of bodily harm,” and the investigation into this disturbing incident continues.
