Bruno Labbadia Appointed as New Super Eagles Head Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of German football manager Bruno Labbadia as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

The NFF confirmed Labbadia’s appointment in a tweet early Tuesday morning, stating: “The Nigeria Football Federation has reached an agreement with German tactician, Bruno Labbadia, to become the Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, Super Eagles.”

Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF General Secretary, revealed that the Executive Committee endorsed the Technical and Development sub-committee’s recommendation to appoint Labbadia. This decision follows the resignation of former coach Finidi George.

Labbadia, born February 8, 1966, is a seasoned football manager and former player, recognized for his time as a striker. His notable achievements include winning the DFB-Pokal with 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1989-90 and the Bundesliga title with FC Bayern Munich in 1993-94. He has also earned two caps for the German national team.

As the 37th head coach of the Super Eagles, Labbadia is only the sixth German to lead the team, following Karl-Heinz Marotzke, Gottlieb Göller, Manfred Höner, Berti Vogts, and Gernot Rohr. Notably, Höner led Nigeria to a runner-up finish at the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations, and Rohr guided the team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Labbadia’s immediate task will be overseeing the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. His debut matches will include two critical fixtures against Benin Republic on September 7 in Uyo and Rwanda on September 10 in Kigali. Four additional qualifying matches will follow in October and November as the team seeks to secure a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
