DSS Releases Investigative Journalist Adejuwon Soyinka After Brief Detention

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Adejuwon Soyinka, an investigative journalist and Regional Editor for The Conversation Africa, just hours after his unexpected arrest at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Soyinka, who arrived in Lagos from the United Kingdom around 5 a.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2024, was detained by DSS operatives and taken to their office in Ikoyi. His sudden arrest raised concerns, though the reasons for his detention remain undisclosed.

A source close to Soyinka, who previously served as the BBC Pidgin Editor, confirmed his release to Channels Television but noted that the DSS had confiscated his travel passport.

When contacted earlier, DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya stated that he was unaware of the incident. The circumstances surrounding Soyinka’s detention and subsequent release have yet to be clarified by the security agency.
