The Federal Government has scheduled a meeting with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other stakeholders for Monday, aiming to address the strike notice recently issued by the union.
Prof. Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, announced this development during a briefing in Abuja on Friday, marking his first year in office. ASUU's 21-day strike notice highlights unresolved issues such as the revitalization funds for public universities, outstanding earned academic allowances, and withheld salaries.
Mamman revealed that invitations have been sent to ASUU and other relevant parties. He noted that many of the concerns raised by ASUU are currently being addressed. For example, the issue of exiting the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) has been resolved by the President, though bureaucratic delays have hindered progress.
The Minister expressed hope that the forthcoming meeting would lead to positive outcomes and expedite the resolution of these matters. He reiterated President Bola Tinubu's commitment to ensuring academic stability and preventing further disruptions.
“Most of ASUU’s demands date back to 1981, and each government has dealt with these issues,” Mamman said. He assured that the government remains dedicated to finding a lasting solution and emphasized the commitment to avoiding strikes and maintaining academic stability.
