Japan has strongly condemned an unprecedented breach of its airspace by a Chinese military aircraft, labeling the act as "utterly unacceptable" and a direct threat to its national security. The incident comes amid growing tensions in the region, following repeated provocations by Chinese vessels near disputed islands in the East China Sea.
On Tuesday, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi described the incursion as a "serious violation of sovereignty," marking the first time a Chinese military aircraft has entered Japanese airspace. "This violation is not only a severe breach of our sovereignty but also a significant threat to our security and is entirely unacceptable," Hayashi stated.
The Japanese Defense Ministry reported that a Y-9 surveillance aircraft from China entered Japan's territorial airspace near the Danjo Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture on Monday morning. The aircraft remained in Japanese airspace for about two minutes, prompting Japan to scramble fighter jets in response. The aircraft eventually returned to China after circling the area multiple times.
In response to the incursion, Japan's Deputy Foreign Minister Masataka Okano summoned China's acting ambassador to lodge a formal protest and demanded measures to prevent future occurrences.
