In a significant shift within Africa’s wealth rankings, Johann Rupert has surpassed Aliko Dangote to become the continent’s richest individual. According to Bloomberg’s latest report, Rupert’s net worth has surged to $13.65 billion, elevating him to the 154th spot on the global rich list. This marks a notable achievement for the South African businessman, whose wealth has seen a substantial increase of $1.21 billion from January to August 2024.
Rupert's fortune is largely attributed to his stake in Cie Financière Richemont, a global leader in luxury goods and the world’s largest luxury watchmaker. The success of Richemont has been a key driver in Rupert’s financial ascent.
In contrast, Aliko Dangote, whose net worth stood at $13.6 billion as of August 2, 2024, has seen a decline in his wealth. The Kano-born tycoon’s fortune has been affected by a significant drop in the value of the Naira, which has impacted his major asset, Dangote Cement. Dangote remains one of Africa’s prominent business figures, holding an 86% stake in the cement giant, which is publicly traded.
The shift in the wealth rankings highlights the dynamic nature of global and regional financial landscapes, where fluctuations in currency values and market performances can have substantial impacts on the fortunes of leading business magnates.
