Kamala Harris Responds to Trump’s Remarks on Her Racial Identity, Calls for Unity

At a rally in Houston, Texas, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed recent comments made by former President Donald Trump questioning her racial identity. Harris, speaking at the Sigma Gamma Rho’s 60th International Biennial Boulé, dismissed Trump's remarks as "the same old show" and stressed that "America deserves better."

Trump's comments, made during an appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) event, drew sharp criticism. He questioned Harris's racial background, stating, "She was always of Indian heritage... I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago." This interview, originally scheduled for an hour, was abruptly cut short after 34 minutes.

In her response, Harris condemned Trump's divisive rhetoric and called for leadership rooted in truth and unity. “This afternoon,” she began, drawing boos from the audience, “Donald Trump spoke at the annual meeting of the National Association of Black Journalists.” She criticized his approach as one of hostility and disrespect, emphasizing that Americans need leaders who embrace unity and strength from diversity.

The Vice President, who is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority—a part of the Divine Nine group of historically significant Black fraternities and sororities—reiterated her commitment to those values during her speech.

The Harris campaign released a statement asserting that Trump's behavior at the NABJ event reflects a long-standing pattern of disrespect towards Black voters. The statement read: “The Donald Trump America saw at NABJ is the one Black voters have known for years.”

In a separate rally in Pennsylvania, Trump continued his criticism of Harris, referencing past derogatory comments and suggesting that she had undergone a "personality makeover." Meanwhile, Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, condemned Trump’s remarks as indicative of a "worse version of an already horrible person."

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also weighed in, labeling Trump’s comments as “repulsive” and “insulting,” and asserting that Harris alone has the authority to define her own identity.

The Vice President's remarks underscore a broader call for respectful discourse and unity in the face of divisive politics.
