Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has expressed deep sorrow over the recent deaths of prominent Igbo figures, including Ohanaeze President-General Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, former Minister Ogbonnaya Onu, Senator Ifeanyi Uba, and renowned musician Onyeka Onwenu.
During a recent meeting with his legal team at the Department of State Services facility in Abuja, Kanu, through his lead counsel Aloy Ejimakor, issued a heartfelt message of condolence to the families of the deceased. He emphasized the importance of respecting the memory of the departed and urged the public to refrain from speaking ill of them, citing Igbo traditions that honor the dead.
Ejimakor relayed Kanu’s sentiments: “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu directed me to extend his sincere condolences to the families of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Senator Ifeanyi Uba, and Dame Onyeka Onwenu. He is deeply pained by their passing and requests that Ndigbo honor their memory by avoiding any disparaging remarks.”
Kanu highlighted the significant impact of these losses, noting that the frequency of such deaths within a short period is troubling. He called for collective prayers to prevent further tragedies in Igbo land.
Of particular note was Kanu’s appreciation for Onyeka Onwenu, who he described as a close confidante and a steadfast supporter of freedom. Kanu remembered her as someone who lived a meaningful life and expressed confidence that she has found eternal rest.
