Landslide in Ketchikan Claims Life, Injures Three, and Forces Evacuations

A devastating landslide in Ketchikan, Alaska, has resulted in one fatality, three injuries, and significant damage to homes and infrastructure, local authorities reported on Sunday.

The landslide occurred around 4 p.m. local time, impacting several residences and prompting immediate emergency responses. The Ketchikan Gateway Borough and city officials issued a joint statement confirming the tragedy and announcing that three individuals were transported to Ketchikan Medical Center. Two of the injured were hospitalized, while the third was treated and released. Authorities have accounted for all other residents.

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy declared a state of emergency for Ketchikan, while both Borough Mayor Rodney Dial and City Mayor Dave Kiffer issued separate emergency declarations. Mayor Dial expressed sorrow over the incident, stating, “It is with a heavy heart we relay that a landslide in the city has taken a life, caused several injuries, damaged homes, and impacted our community.”

Mayor Kiffer described the landslide as unprecedented in his 65 years in Ketchikan, highlighting the need for further understanding of the region-wide issue with the assistance of the state geologist.

The landslide has led to mandatory evacuations for residents of Third Avenue and nearby streets, with a shelter established at Ketchikan High School for those displaced. Power restoration efforts were underway, with some areas reconnected by 8:15 p.m., though others remain without electricity as repairs continue.

A potential secondary landslide area was identified to the south of the original slide, with emergency crews on standby. Various local and state agencies have mobilized in response, with additional support expected from the Department of Homeland Security, emergency management specialists, and federal Department of Transportation personnel.

Governor Dunleavy has directed state agencies to deploy all available resources and staff to assist with the response, emphasizing that the city is receiving support from the state emergency operations center.
