NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms and Rain Across Nigeria for Upcoming Week

 

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting widespread thunderstorms and rain from Sunday through Tuesday.

According to NiMet's outlook released on Saturday, thunderstorms are expected in northern Nigeria, particularly over parts of Borno, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe States on Sunday morning. The agency anticipates thunderstorms will persist across the northern region into the afternoon and evening.

In the North Central region, NiMet forecasts thunderstorms with rain for the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Nasarawa, and Plateau States during Sunday morning, with similar weather conditions expected to continue throughout the day.

Southern Nigeria is predicted to experience cloudy skies in the morning, with intermittent rain likely over most areas later in the day.

For Monday, NiMet expects morning thunderstorms in parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa, Yobe, and Jigawa States. The northern region will continue to see thunderstorms later in the day. The North Central region is anticipated to have morning thunderstorms with rain in the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara States, with additional thunderstorms forecasted for the afternoon and evening.

On Tuesday, morning thunderstorms are predicted for Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna States. Cloudy skies are expected across the northern region later in the day. The North Central region will see thunderstorms with rain in Niger and Kwara States in the morning, with similar conditions continuing into the afternoon and evening over parts of Kogi, the Federal Capital Territory, and Benue States. Southern Nigeria is expected to experience intermittent rain throughout the day.

NiMet has advised residents to avoid flood-prone areas due to the risk of urban flooding from heavy rains. The agency also cautioned that strong winds may precede thunderstorms in affected areas. The public is encouraged to follow safety advisories and stay updated with NiMet’s weather reports.

Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to ensure effective planning for flight operations.
