Afrobeats singer and songwriter Stanley Omah Didia, known to fans as Omah Lay, has opened up about the profound impact his prison experience in Uganda has had on his life and career.
Omah Lay, along with fellow artist Tems and her manager, was arrested in Uganda on December 12, 2020, for participating in a concert at Speke Resort in Kampala. The event was held in violation of COVID-19 social distancing regulations. Following their arrest, the trio was detained and subsequently charged in court. After spending three days in jail, they were eventually granted bail.
In a recent interview with Amazon Music, Omah Lay discussed how this challenging experience reshaped his perspective on freedom. He explained that his brief imprisonment heightened his appreciation for freedom, a theme that now permeates his music.
"After being in that cell for three days, I just love my freedom so much now that I fight for it with every record… I don’t want to give Uganda so much credit for locking me up, but that shifted my perspective about freedom," the 'Soso' singer shared.
Omah Lay's reflections offer insight into how personal hardships can influence artistic expression, underscoring the resilience and adaptability of artists in the face of adversity.
