Buju Banton Reveals Deep Connection with Nigeria, Criticizes Afrobeats Music

Jamaican dancehall legend Mark Anthony Myrie, better known as Buju Banton, has shared a rare insight into his deep connection with Nigeria. In a recent appearance on the 'Drink Champs' podcast, co-hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN, Banton revealed that his tribe, the Maroons, originated from the Igbo tribe in Nigeria.

Banton expressed concern over the threat to their indigenous land by the current Jamaican government, which he claims is bringing in Chinese and other foreigners to displace them. "Our indigenous way of life and our land are being threatened by the current government of Jamaica, which seeks to bring Chinese and other nationalities into the Cockpit region, a sacred area for us Maroons," he stated. "Maroons are some of the indigenous warriors on my island. We fought the British relentlessly. We are called Black Maroons. My generation originated from Nigeria. I am an Igbo man according to my bloodline."

In addition to discussing his heritage, Buju Banton also shared his critical perspective on Afrobeats music. He argued that Afrobeats, while currently popular, will eventually fade due to its lack of substance. The ragga and reggae singer accused Afrobeats artists of borrowing heavily from Jamaican reggae and dancehall music without acknowledging their sources. "Afrobeats music has no substance and will fade with time," he claimed. Banton further criticized Afrobeats artists for focusing on personal enrichment rather than using their platform to advocate for the liberation of the African continent.

Buju Banton's comments have sparked conversations about cultural connections and the responsibilities of artists in using their influence for greater causes.
