Governors affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have rallied behind Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State in his ongoing conflict with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This show of support for Fubara followed a contentious party congress where the Rivers State governor was allegedly excluded from participating. The PDP Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF) met in Jalingo, Taraba State, on Friday, August 23, and called on the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to revisit the congress and ensure that Fubara is granted his rightful role in the party's leadership.
In a communiqué issued at the conclusion of the meeting, the governors expressed concern over the political situation in Rivers State, noting the use of court rulings to influence the outcomes of party congresses. The communiqué stated:
“The Forum notes the political impasse in Rivers State, where court judgments are employed to determine the outcome of the party congresses.
“The PDP Governors’ Forum restates its stand with the Governor of Rivers State and will engage the NWC of our great party to revisit the congress with a view to correcting the anomaly and allowing His Excellency Governor Siminalayi Fubara to take his rightful leadership position of the party in the state.”
In addition to addressing the situation in Rivers State, the governors also condemned recent remarks by President Bola Tinubu regarding the upcoming governorship election in Edo State, alleging that the President had made statements suggesting a bias towards his party. The governors criticized what they described as systematic intimidation of PDP supporters by the Nigerian Police and called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the law enforcement agency remains impartial.
The communiqué further urged President Tinubu to demonstrate statesmanship by preventing his officials from making comments that could negatively portray state governments, particularly in relation to federal interventions that are insufficient to address pressing issues.
The PDP governors reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Nigerian populace and vowed to take all necessary steps to alleviate their suffering. They also expressed concern over the federal government's approach to revenue distribution, stressing the importance of adhering to existing laws that govern the allocation of revenue within the federation.
