Tim Walz Accepts Invitation to Debate JD Vance on October 1

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who is Kamala Harris’s running mate, has confirmed his willingness to participate in a vice-presidential debate against JD Vance, Ohio senator and Donald Trump’s running mate, on October 1.

In response to CBS News’ invitation for a debate in New York City, Walz took to Twitter/X to express his readiness: “See you on October 1, JD.” CBS News had offered four potential dates for the debate: September 17, September 24, October 1, and October 8.

The Harris campaign issued a statement confirming their acceptance of CBS's invitation: “Harris for President has accepted CBS’ invitation to a Vice Presidential Candidate Debate on October 1. Governor Walz looks forward to debating JD Vance – if he shows up.” As of now, Vance has not confirmed his participation on the proposed date.

Walz, who has previously made remarks about his eagerness to debate Vance, referenced a widely circulated but false claim about Vance's memoir. "I can’t wait to debate the guy — that is, if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up,” Walz said.

Earlier this year, the Biden campaign indicated that Vice President Kamala Harris would be prepared to debate the Republican vice-presidential nominee on either July 23 or August 13. At that time, President Biden had not yet endorsed Harris as his successor and Vance had not been officially announced as Trump’s running mate.

Vance’s campaign had previously declined to commit to a debate date before the Democratic National Convention, which took place on August 19.

In the presidential race, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are scheduled to face off in their first debate on September 10. The debate will be moderated by David Muir, anchor and managing editor of World News Tonight, and Linsey Davis, anchor of ABC News Live Prime.
