The Canadian government has issued a warning regarding a potential new virus that could lead to significant disruptions in food and fuel supplies. This alert follows the release of the second edition of the Centre for Occupational Health and Safety's "Flu and Infectious Disease Outbreaks Business Continuity Plan Handbook."
Published in June, the updated guide is designed to help employers prepare for future pandemics. It includes a focus on a hypothetical virus that could cause even greater disruption than COVID-19. The guide highlights potential issues such as increased illness and death rates in age groups not typically affected during annual flu seasons.
The handbook emphasizes the need for businesses to prepare for scenarios where employees may be forced to stay home due to an outbreak. It notes the uncertainty in estimating the impact of a new virus, including how many people might be affected, the speed of its spread, and the potential for workplace absenteeism.
According to the guide, a future pandemic might occur in multiple waves, with each wave spaced three to nine months apart. These cycles could persist for up to two years, leading to disruptions in various sectors such as telecommunications, banking, water, gasoline, medicine, and food supplies.
Employers are advised to plan for reduced labor availability, supply chain issues, and changes in consumer demand as part of their business continuity strategies.
