The United States has expanded its sanctions regime against Russia, targeting nearly 400 entities and individuals involved in supporting the Kremlin’s ongoing war in Ukraine. This latest move aims to further undermine Russia's military capabilities and its efforts to evade existing sanctions.
In a coordinated effort by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Department of State, the sanctions impact a broad spectrum of targets across Russia and several other regions, including Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. These measures focus on entities and individuals whose services and products sustain Russia's military operations and facilitate sanctions evasion.
“Russia has turned its economy into a tool for supporting the Kremlin’s military-industrial complex,” said Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo. He emphasized that the latest sanctions are part of a continued effort to disrupt Russia’s military supply chains and financial networks, fulfilling commitments made by President Biden and G7 leaders.
The sanctions target a variety of transnational networks, including those involved in procuring military supplies, evading sanctions for Russian oligarchs, laundering gold, and supporting Russia’s military-industrial base. Specific measures include restrictions on companies facilitating the acquisition of sensitive military technology and advanced equipment for Russia.
The Treasury Department is also focusing on Russian financial technology companies that play a crucial role in Russia’s financial sector. Additionally, the U.S. is monitoring new efforts by Russian financial institutions to evade sanctions through the establishment of overseas branches and subsidiaries.
The State Department's sanctions target entities linked to Russia’s energy, metals, and mining sectors, as well as those involved in sanctions evasion and the production of military unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Also included are Belarusian entities supporting Russia's war efforts and additional subsidiaries of State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom.
This expansion of sanctions underscores the U.S. commitment to supporting Ukraine and holding the Kremlin accountable for its aggression. The measures aim to limit Russia's future revenue streams from key industries and further isolate its economic and military networks.
