Abia State University, Uturu, has suspended Dr. Udochukwu Emmanuel Ndukwe, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, following serious allegations of sexual harassment involving a female student. The suspension, which lasts for three months, was announced in a letter dated July 30, 2024, signed by the university’s registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu.
Dr. Ndukwe has been accused of repeatedly harassing, intimidating, and extorting female students within the department. The situation gained widespread attention after a video surfaced online showing Ndukwe in a compromising position, reportedly being interrogated while naked. This footage allegedly stemmed from an incident involving a final-year female student who had been allegedly subjected to harassment by Ndukwe for the past two years.
In response to the scandal, the university administration has described Ndukwe's actions as a significant "embarrassment" to the institution. The letter from the registrar detailed that Ndukwe's suspension will be on half salary and that he is required to hand over any university property in his possession to his Head of Department.
A panel has been established to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations. The university’s decision reflects its commitment to addressing serious misconduct and maintaining academic integrity.
Dr. Ndukwe, who recently married in 2022 and completed his PhD this year, now faces a crucial period as the university seeks to resolve the matter and uphold its standards of conduct.
