The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is preparing to suspend Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, for alleged anti-party activities. This announcement was made by the party's National Chairman, Chief Edozie Njoku, during a press conference at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday.
Chief Njoku accused Governor Soludo of obstructing efforts by the Supreme Court-recognized NWC to restore peace within APGA, continuing actions that go against the party's interests. He stated that by Thursday, September 26, 2024, the NWC would reveal the names of members who have been suspended, including Soludo, for their involvement in anti-party activities.
Ahead of the upcoming governorship election in Anambra State, Chief Njoku emphasized that APGA has not endorsed a sole candidate for the election. He expressed doubts about Governor Soludo's chances of winning the party's primaries, stating that anyone interested in the governorship should undergo a transparent selection process.
Njoku also highlighted recent legal battles involving the party, including efforts to delay his recognition as the national chairman by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), despite a Supreme Court ruling affirming his position. He criticized Soludo for orchestrating actions behind the scenes, including influencing the state House of Assembly to pass laws that hinder APGA from fielding candidates.
Njoku expressed frustration over the situation, noting that despite his calls for peace within the party, the actions of certain members, including Governor Soludo, have pushed the NWC to its limits. He emphasized that no individual, not even the governor, is bigger than the party.
"We must act decisively," Njoku said. "APGA is here to stay, and we cannot allow anyone to undermine the party's integrity. We have already agreed on suspensions, and if the only governor we have is engaging in anti-party activities, we will take action."
The NWC is expected to finalize and announce the suspensions, signaling a significant internal conflict within APGA ahead of the governorship election in Anambra State.
