A California couple, Benny and Susanne Anguiano, are overjoyed after reuniting with their beloved cat, Rayne Beau, who went missing in Yellowstone National Park. The reunion happened last month after an animal welfare group informed them that their cat had been found in Roseville, California, about 800 miles from the park.
The couple lost Rayne Beau in June during a camping trip when he was startled and ran into the woods. For 60 days, they searched tirelessly, leaving out treats and toys in hopes of luring him back. “We had to leave without him,” Susanne said, recalling the difficult day they had to abandon the search. “It was the hardest day because I felt like I was abandoning him.”
In early August, Rayne Beau’s microchip played a crucial role in his recovery. The couple received a notification from Pet Watch, a pet-tracking service, informing them that their cat had been located at a shelter in Roseville. A kind woman had found Rayne Beau wandering alone and brought him to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
When they were reunited, Susanne described Rayne Beau as “really depleted” and said he likely had little energy left for his journey.
The couple shared their emotional story on social media, explaining they initially kept it private because it was too traumatic to discuss. While the exact route Rayne Beau took to travel 800 miles remains unknown, they hope that sharing their experience will encourage anyone with information to come forward.
They also emphasized the importance of pet trackers, as an estimated 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen in the U.S. each year. Without a microchip, only one in 50 lost cats in shelters are reunited with their owners, but with one, nearly two out of five cats find their way back home.
