The Federal Government has officially provided 64 buses, each with a 100-seater capacity and powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), to representatives of organized labor and student unions. The handover took place on Sunday during a brief ceremony at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
As part of broader efforts to reduce transportation costs following the removal of fuel subsidies, the government, through the presidency, also distributed over 400 CNG conversion kits to private sector transporters in four states. These kits are intended to facilitate the conversion of vehicles to CNG, offering a more affordable alternative to traditional fuel.
The move comes in response to growing public concern over the rising cost of transportation after the subsidy removal. The Federal Government has been urging vehicle owners, particularly in the public transport sector, to switch to CNG to lower fuel expenses.
For months, labor unions have been advocating for the Tinubu administration to introduce palliative measures, including a significant increase in the number of CNG-powered vehicles on the roads, to alleviate the economic impact of the subsidy removal.
