A recent investigation has revealed that former advisers and associates of Donald Trump have been involved in developing a website that promotes pro-Russian narratives and conspiracy theories. This website, Intelligencer, has drawn attention for its content related to the war in Ukraine, election fraud, and COVID-19 vaccines.
Notable figures like George Papadopoulos, a former Trump aide, and his wife, Simona Mangiante, are part of the site's editorial board. The website has seen a significant growth in traffic, with a 300% increase in August. Intelligencer has become popular within right-wing circles, with contributions from individuals who previously worked for Russian state media.
The growth of Intelligencer comes at a time when the U.S. government is intensifying its efforts to counter Russian influence ahead of the 2024 elections. Recently, two members of RT, a Russian state-funded network, were charged with money laundering and violations related to the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
Although there is no direct evidence of Kremlin funding, concerns have been raised over the website’s opaque ownership and its potential role in spreading Russian disinformation. George Eliason, an American journalist with ties to eastern Ukraine, played a key role in launching the site.
Several of the site's editorial board members have strong connections to Trump's past campaigns, and many of the website's posts promote debunked conspiracy theories and anti-Ukrainian rhetoric. Intelligencer has even been linked to Russian and European propaganda outlets, raising further concerns about its role in shaping public opinion in the U.S.
The website's content and its involvement with figures connected to Russian influence indicate that it may be part of a broader effort to sway public opinion, particularly ahead of the upcoming U.S. elections.
