INEC Commissioner Onuoha Defends Appointment Amid Controversy Over Wike Ties

Anugbum Onuoha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, has defended his appointment to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), addressing concerns about his relationship with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Onuoha clarified that his familial connection to Wike does not disqualify him from the role.

Speaking during an interview on Friday, September 20, Onuoha, who is a law associate professor, highlighted his qualifications, stating, "People should be asking if I am competent to do the job, not focusing on my family ties. I was an electoral commissioner in Rivers State’s RSIEC, and nobody complained then."

The controversy arose when Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, called for Onuoha’s redeployment, citing concerns about his ability to oversee a free and fair election due to his relationship with Wike. Onuoha previously served as a special adviser on lands during Wike’s tenure as Governor of Rivers State.

In response, INEC rejected the request for Onuoha’s redeployment, insisting that the focus should be on the integrity of the electoral process. Onuoha emphasized that he was appointed based on merit, screened by the Senate, and confirmed by INEC’s leadership.

Onuoha urged Nigerians to evaluate his “competence, character, and conscience” rather than his family connections, dismissing the concerns as politically driven. He noted that there were no objections to his posting to Edo in 2023. "Politicians often make wild allegations when they realize you will not serve their interests," he added.

INEC reaffirmed its confidence in Onuoha’s ability to conduct a fair election in Edo State, reassuring the public of its commitment to a transparent electoral process.
