Instagram Introduces Teen Accounts for Enhanced Safety of Under-18 Users

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has launched a new feature called "teen accounts" aimed at improving the safety of users under 18. Announced in a blog post on Tuesday, September 17, the feature is designed to protect young users by introducing stricter privacy settings and content controls.

Users under 16 will need parental approval to change the default settings, while those aged 16 and 17 can modify the settings independently. Parents will also have access to tools that allow them to monitor their children's activity and limit app usage.

The teen accounts will automatically be set to private, and users under 18 will only receive messages from people they follow or are already connected to. The feature also limits exposure to sensitive content, such as violence and cosmetic surgery promotions, and filters offensive language from comments and direct messages.

Teen users will be prompted to take breaks from the app after 60 minutes of usage per day, and a "sleep mode" will mute notifications from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., encouraging healthier app habits.

The feature is rolling out in the UK, US, Canada, and Australia within 60 days, with a global release planned by January 2025. Meta also announced plans to bring similar teen protection features to its other platforms by 2025.
