Jerusalem, Israel — An Israeli official has proposed the possibility of granting Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar safe passage out of Gaza, contingent on the release of all hostages currently held in the Palestinian territory.
Gal Hirsch, Israel’s coordinator for hostages and the missing, shared this idea during an interview with CNN’s Jessica Dean on Sunday. Hirsch stated that if the remaining 101 hostages are returned, Israel might agree to provide safe passage to Sinwar and anyone accompanying him. He described Sinwar as "the new Hitler" and emphasized that such a concession could help end the conflict and aid in Gaza’s recovery.
Hirsch further detailed the proposal in an interview with Bloomberg on Tuesday, stating that the offer of safe passage was put forward a day and a half ago. He said Israel is prepared to offer safe passage to Sinwar and his family, provided that Gaza undergoes demilitarization and de-radicalization. He also mentioned that Israel could consider releasing some of its own prisoners as part of a deal.
Hirsch's comments have been directed toward ending the current conflict and establishing a new management system for Gaza. However, he did not disclose Hamas' response to this offer.
CNN has reached out to Hamas for their response to Hirsch’s proposal and has also contacted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office for further comment.
A diplomat familiar with ceasefire discussions between Hamas and Israel told CNN on Wednesday that there is no evidence suggesting Sinwar is interested in leaving Gaza. The diplomat indicated that Sinwar might view Gaza as a safer location compared to other countries such as Iran or Lebanon.
