New York Police Commissioner Edward Caban Resigns Amid Federal Investigations

New York, NY — Edward Caban has resigned as the New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner, effective Thursday, marking the first high-profile departure from Mayor Eric Adams' administration amid ongoing federal investigations into his office and the NYPD.

Caban's resignation follows reports that federal investigators from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York had recently seized his electronic devices and phones. The investigation reportedly involves issues related to Caban’s brother and the enforcement of regulations at New York City nightclubs, though specifics of the probe remain undisclosed.

In his resignation statement, Caban cited the distraction caused by the investigations as a key reason for stepping down. "The news around recent developments has created a distraction for our department," Caban said. "I am unwilling to let my attention be on anything other than our important work, or the safety of the men and women of the NYPD."

Caban, the first Latino to lead the NYPD, had served as commissioner for just 13 months. He has been with the NYPD for over three decades. His resignation follows the short tenure of his predecessor, Keechant Sewell, who left after 18 months due to internal conflicts.

In response to Caban’s resignation, Mayor Adams appointed Tom Donlon, a former FBI official, as the interim commissioner. Donlon previously led New York’s Office of Homeland Security and the FBI’s National Threat Center. "I am honored and humbled to be named interim-Commissioner of the New York City Police Department," Donlon said. He emphasized his goals to continue reducing crime, uphold integrity, and support the NYPD officers.

Caban’s lawyers stated that he is not a target of the investigation and expressed his commitment to fully cooperating with federal authorities. "Commissioner Caban is an accomplished public servant who has dedicated his life to the safety and security of the people of this great city," the statement read.

The federal investigations have also involved raids on the homes of several other top city officials, including First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phil Banks III. Additionally, subpoenas have been issued for the phones of three lower-ranking police officials.

Mayor Adams has not publicly supported Caban amidst the investigations but expressed respect for his decision to resign. "I respect his decision and I wish him well," Adams said during a news conference.

The NYPD and Adams’ office are cooperating with the ongoing federal inquiries. Neither Adams nor his staff members have been accused of any wrongdoing.
