In a disturbing incident during a raid in the occupied West Bank, Israeli soldiers were captured on video pushing three apparently lifeless bodies off a rooftop on Thursday. The raid, part of ongoing military operations since late August, took place in the town of Qabatiya, where dozens of Palestinians have reportedly been killed, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have acknowledged the incident, calling it a "serious" violation of their values. However, the IDF has not confirmed whether the soldiers involved are under investigation. The raid was witnessed by both Associated Press (AP) journalists and Ameed Shehadeh, a correspondent for Al-Arabi, who described soldiers attempting to remove bodies by force after a bulldozer failed to do so.
Footage from the raid shows soldiers dragging the bodies to the edge of the roof and pushing them off, while others stand below. International law requires that bodies, even those of enemy combatants, be treated with dignity, a standard that rights groups argue was not met in this case. Shawan Jabarin, director of Palestinian rights group Al-Haq, condemned the actions as "savage."
Israeli military operations in the West Bank have intensified since the Gaza war began on October 7. Over 700 Palestinians have reportedly been killed in these operations, which Israel justifies as necessary to combat militant threats. Meanwhile, the U.S. National Security Council has expressed concern over the footage, with spokesperson John Kirby calling the actions "deeply disturbing."
As tensions remain high, the Israeli military continues to target militants in the region. On Friday, at least 14 Palestinians were killed in Gaza during Israeli strikes, further escalating the conflict. The northern West Bank, particularly, has seen some of the worst violence since the war’s onset, as Israeli forces push deeper into Palestinian territories.
