The Lagos State Government has defended its decision to increase boarding fees at its model colleges, stating that the hike is necessary for improving student welfare.
Mr. Ganiu Lawal, Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, explained on Monday that the previous boarding fee of N35,000, in place since 2021, no longer aligns with current financial realities.
As of the 2024/2025 academic session, which starts on September 15, 2024, the boarding fees will rise to N100,000. Lawal acknowledged that this change has met with some resistance from parents but emphasized that the increase is crucial for maintaining and enhancing the quality of student care.
"The Ministry understands that the increase in boarding fees has not been well received by some parents. However, the decision was made with the primary goal of ensuring the well-being of the students," Lawal said.
He noted that the boarding fees, which are paid each term, cover essential services including feeding, janitorial services, and other costs associated with maintaining the hostel environment. Lawal also pointed out that enrolling a child in a boarding school is a personal choice, and parents are responsible for covering these fees.
