Engineer Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Director-General and CEO of the Nigeria Identity Management Commission (NIMC), announced that 332,715 students have been registered for the federal government’s Student Loan initiative, with over 18,000 students already receiving payments.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday, during the National Day of Identity event, Coker-Odusote highlighted the theme, “Digital Public Infrastructure – Enabling Access to Services in Nigeria.” She emphasized the significance of identity and its role in promoting inclusion, protection, and empowerment.
The Director-General praised the Federal Government's investment in social and palliative programs aimed at supporting vulnerable citizens amid economic reforms. She stressed that the focus of the event on building a strong digital public infrastructure (DPI) aligns with the government’s efforts to enhance access to services.
Coker-Odusote explained that DPI is a digital network established by the public sector to deliver economic opportunities and social services efficiently and securely. She noted that DPI helps overcome challenges related to physical distance, documentation, and transaction costs, thereby accelerating financial inclusion and transforming lives.
Under her leadership, NIMC has enrolled over 110 million Nigerians for the National Identification Number (NIN). The Student Loan Initiative, which is part of this broader digital infrastructure effort, has registered 332,715 students for loans and facilitated payments to over 18,000 students through collaborations with 257 institutions.
The Director-General’s remarks underscored how DPI can remove financial barriers to education and improve access to essential services.
