Lion Kills Zoo Worker at Olusegun Obasanjo Library Wildlife Park in Ogun State

A tragic incident occurred at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Wildlife Park in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where a lion killed a 35-year-old zoo worker, Babaji Daule. The incident took place on Saturday, September 28, 2024, when Daule, a trained lion handler originally from Bauchi State, was feeding the animal.

According to reports, the handler forgot to properly secure the locks and barricades of the lion’s enclosure before approaching the cage. This lapse in safety allowed the lion to escape and fatally attack him.

Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday. "The Area Commander Metro reported a tragic event that occurred on September 28, 2024, at around 7:40 PM, at the OOPL zoo. Babaji Daule, a 35-year-old lion handler, was killed by the lion after failing to secure the enclosure," she stated.

Odutola explained that the lion attacked Daule, causing severe injuries to his neck, which led to his death. The lion had to be shot to release its grip on the handler. Daule's body was later transported to the mortuary at Ijaye General Hospital for further examination.

The incident has raised concerns about safety protocols in wildlife facilities, highlighting the need for strict adherence to safety measures when handling dangerous animals.
